One thing you don’t see in most garden ponds is stoneworts. Stoneworts look like normal underwater plants but are actually a rather special kind of giant alga.

There’s a big clump growing under the water in the foreground in this (large) garden pond in Norfolk.

Lush growth of stoneworts are usually the sign of the highest quality clear, unpolluted water – I’ve never before seen them in a garden pond. I’d be interested to hear from anyone else who has.
